| Resumo | This study evaluates the main features of the atmospheric circulation associated with the South Atlantic Subtropical High Pressure Center (SASHP) during the austral winter and summer periods. The analysis (isobaric levels) was done using 20 years data period from the National Centers for Environmental Predictions (NCEP) reanalysis data set. It was found that during the austral winter, relatively strong low level winds are respectively located on the northeast, northwest and southeastern sectors of SASHP's center. Apparently the impact of the low level moisture convergence is stronger over the Northeast Brazil east coast. This feature might be important to the rainfall regime of that region. Also, during the austral winter the SASHP has impact in the main cities located in the vicinity of southeast coast. During this period, as the land is colder than the ocean, the high pressure expands toward the cold continent, where the low level winds are relatively weak. This behavior is favorable for the onset of subsidence inversion, early morning fog, and sometimes frost. In this sense the South, Southeast and portions of the Mid-West Regions feel directly the SASHP's effects. During the austral summer, with exception of the Southeastern Atlantic Ocean region, the low level winds associated with the SASHP are relatively weak. This feature is favorable for a decrease of moisture transport along Northeast Brazilian Coast. However, the prevailing northeast winds near the South and Southeastern coast is a key factor for feeding moisture along the oceanic portions of the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (ZACZ). Also, comparing to the austral winter behavior, it is observed that during the austral summer the SASHP displaces slightly southeastwards assuming a more oriented anticyclonic circulation shape. |
